What is involved in tracking a vehicle?

Useful, informative Vehicle Tracking requires vehicle tracking software and a vehicle tracking unit mounted in the vehicle, typically under the dash or seat out of reach of the driver. Track Your Truck offers both. Our NetTrack application is a web-based software platform that is accessible from just about anywhere. Our vehicle tracking units come in two types: Cellular/GPS (Coyote) and Satellite/GPS (SkyRunner).

What is the difference in Cellular/GPS (Coyote) and Satellite/GPS (SkyRunner)?

In order to see the location of the vehicle, you need the GPS coordinates (Lat/Lon). The GPS system only gathers this information but it has to be sent to the NetTrack software. The way we send this can be done over a Cellular Data Network or via a Satellite Data Network. Click here to see how this works...

Which unit (Coyote or SkyRunner) is best?

Both Coyote and SkyRunner behave in similar fashions…that is they both provide GPS information to NetTrack. However, the cost to send GPS messages over Cellular (Coyote) is much cheaper than that of Satellite (SkyRunner). Of course the Coyote cannot send data when there is no Cellular Data coverage. Thus, our philosophy is to look at your coverage area and if you have Cellular Data coverage from one of our major partner networks (Verizon, Cingular, T-Mobile), then we propose the Coyote. If not, then the alternative is the SkyRunner.

Can I use both Coyote and SkyRunner together?

The simple answer is “absolutely”. Our NetTrack application allows you to seamlessly use both the Coyote and the SkyRunner on the same system. There is no need to have separate accounts. Track Your Truck integrates everything for you and the good news is that there is no additional cost for this feature.

Can I use have a system with Coyote Edge and Coyote 1xRTT together?

Yes. You can mix any and all our solutions with our NetTrack software. In fact, you really can’t tell which truck has one unit or the other; the integration is seamless and easy.

Do I need a professional installer?

It depends. If you have a person with basic vehicle electrical knowledge, then you should be able to install the units. We have designed our units and our installation guide to be as simple as possible. Each unit will be connected to an ignition source, a constant power source (vehicle battery) and chassis ground. TYT provides all needed cabling and fuse kits. If you do need a professional installer, TYT also has a list of installers around the country that you can contract with directly. You should expect to pay between $75 and $150 depending on your geographical location. You should try to negotiate with the installer; you can usually get a better price if you bring the vehicles to the installer or if you can give the installer access to all your vehicles at once (i.e. weekends, nights, after hours, etc.)

How long after I order will my order ship?

TYT has streamlined the order and activation process by stocking all necessary items. In most cases we can activate and ship your order in 48 hours; please allow extra time for any special items. Remember that many things have to happen to get your units ready for shipment. All your paperwork must be completed and sent to TYT; TYT must complete credit check and activation with your carrier; and your units will be commissioned, tested, and verified. In fact when you receive your modems, they will already have reported GPS information to your NetTrack account. All these steps insure that you get a completely working system when it arrives on your doorstep.

What if I have multiple locations/offices?

The TYT Coyote is offered on multiple cellular carriers in order to give you a solution no matter where you have offices. Also you can mix and match Coyote units. Please note though that a 1xRTT Coyote cannot be configured to be an EDGE Coyote as they use differing cellular technology. Of course, the SkyRunner will report anywhere in North America as it does not rely on cellular towers but rather on a communication satellite.

Do I need to buy any software or pay software maintenance fees?

TYT’s NetTrack Vehicle Tracking Services software is provided for all TYT users free of charge. This is included with your monthly vehicle tracking fee. Each customer is provided with a secure login and password. TYT continually adds features and improvements to NetTrack; in most cases these improvements automatically appear for each user.

What type of Internet Connection do I need?

While TYT recommends a simple high speed Internet connection (DSL, Cable, T1, et. al.), the NetTrack Vehicle Tracking Services software does not require anything beyond a dial-up connection. With a dial-up connection, however, the user will notice slower response when navigating, running reports or downloading.

What happens if my vehicle drives out of cellular coverage (Coyote)?

The Coyote Edge and 1xRTT have built-in logic to sense if cellular coverage is not available. During its time out of coverage, the Coyote will store each GPS message and Key On/Off event; these are not lost EVEN IF the unit is disconnected from power. Once the unit comes back into cellular coverage, all the information will then be sent to NetTrack. You can even tell that this happened by viewing the GPS Detail Report and choosing the “Verbose” option. There will be an “Event Q (queue)” for each GPS message that was received by NetTrack and was more than 2 minutes old.

What’s the difference between the antennas you offer for the Coyote?

We provide three (3) different types of antennas for permanant vehicle installations: Low Profile, Window-Mount, Covert (see the antenna spec sheet). We suggest using the Low Profile or Window-Mount for most installations. The Low Profile is usually used on more industrial type installations (heavy duty trucks, vans, etc.) and the Window Mount used for lighter vehicles (light duty trucks, vans, passenger cars). The Window Mount is installed with heavy-duty 3M backing tape and the Low Profile requires a 3/8” hole to be drilled in the roof of the vehicle. The Low Profile is thus a more solid mount and not prone to any type of problem; whereas, the Window Mount could be vandalized. However, the Window Mount’s outer glass whip is easily and economically replaceable. We stock these mounts and they are relatively inexpensive (around $16) compared to the price of a completely new antenna.
